Mitkof island is 23 miles long and 16.5 miles wide, covering a total of 211 square miles. Much of the island is covered by muskeg bogs. Muskeg bogs are swampy areas made up of moss, leaves, and other decaying matter.

The water that surrounds the islands is controled by the ocean's tides and much is planned around the high and low tides.
